How to Use Thieves
Essential Oil Blend
Diffuse for 15 to 20 minutes every 3 to 4 hours.
Diffusing is one of the most effective ways to experience the many effects of essential oils.
The easiest and simplest way of putting essential oils into the air for inhalation is to use an aromatic diffuser.
A cold air diffuser uses room-temperature air to blow oil up against some kind of nebulizer.
This breaks the oils up into a micro-fine mist that is then dispersed into the air.
The oils, with their oxygenating molecules, will then remain suspended for several hours to
freshen and improve the quality of the air. The anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties of the oils kill bacteria and help reduce fungus and mold. Essential oils, when diffused, have been found to reduce the amount of airborne chemicals, as well as help to create greater spiritual, physical, and emotional harmony.
Recommended Diffusing Time
While a diffusers can run continuously until it is out of oil, the greatest therapeutic benefit
is received by diffusing oils for only 15 minutes out of an hour so that the olfactory system
has time to recover before receiving more oils. This also helps to conserve your oils.
A simple way to do this is to use a programmable timer that can automatically turn on
your diffuser each hour for 15 minutes.
Oils for Air Purification
Diffusing essential oils in the home or work place is one of the best ways to purify our
environment. Cinnamon bark, mountain savory, oregano, and Thieves (a blend by Young Living
Essential Oils), were all tested by Weber State University and were shown to kill 100% of
the airborne bacteria present when diffused into the atmosphere.
Direct Body Application
If you are planning to use essential oils directly to the skin, it is a good idea to test
a small patch of skin first to be sure there is no reaction.
It is important to apply essential oils to the most beneficial areas of the body.
If you have a headache for instance, a good place to apply the oil would be a
corresponding pressure point or reflexology point to the head, but for those who
are not familiar with either acupressure or reflexology, there is an easier way.
Apply the oil directly to your feet.
Many people believe the oil should be applied to the soles of the feet only but,
others recommend applying essential oil to the whole foot to include the reflexes on the top of the foot as well.
How to apply the Thieves Oil
The safest way to use the oil is by applying it to the bottoms of the feet. The oil is very hot
and can cause severe skin sensitivity if used improperly. It must be diluted with a carrier oil
such as V-6 Mixing oil. Young Living
does not recommend use on infants or sensitve skin areas of the body.
Here are a few dilution ratios:
The first number refers to how many parts Thieves oil.
The second number refers to how many parts carrier oil.
A "neat" drop refers to a drop of liquid that is unmixed, or undiluted.
A neat drop of Thieves essential oil is a drop of oil taken directly
from the bottle.
1:4 Ratio (25% dilution)
This ratio is still extremely concentrated but can be tolerated by most on
the bottoms of the feet. This ratio is equal to 25 drops Thieves oil to 1 tsp
carrier oil. Mix in an amber glass bottle or clear glass container with lid
and store in a dark place.
Always keep out of the reach of children.
Use enough oil to cover the bottom of each foot.
1:10 Ratio (10% dilution)
A 10% dilution is still considered quite concentrated and should be used when
aggressive results are desired. Most adults can withstand this dilution on
other non-sensitive ares of the body such as the chest, neck, and back.
This ratio is equal to 10 drops Thieves to 1 tsp carrier oil.
Most adults use this ratio when we have been around someone who has been
sick or if we've already come down with something.
It keeps us from getting sick in the first place or if already sick,
we usually get well within a day or so.
1:100 Ratio (1% dilution)
This ratio is recommended for use on children, the elderly and those with
health concerns. This ratio is equal to 1 drop Thieves to 1 tsp carrier oil.
Pregnant women shouldn't use more than a 1% dilution of any essential oil
and only after consulting a physician.
I use the 1:2 ratio on the bottom of my daughter's feet and she is fine with it.
I personally use Thieves "neat". It's warm and tingly but not uncomfortable for us.
Some kids (and adults) feet and skin are more sensitive.
Test an essential oil before you use it. Do a patch test by aplying a drop of oil to the
inside of the arm. Leave on for a few minutes and if any redness or itching develops,
don't use the oil, or dilute.
Test Thieves oil. The bottom line is to take extreme care until you know how much
your family's skin can handle. Using more doesn't necessarily mean better results.
Because essential oils penetrate your skin rapidly, you should look for a carrier
oil that is also easily absorbed such as Young Living's V-6 Oil.
Where to apply
Dilute 1 part Thieves Oil to 4 parts
Possible sun/skin sensitivity. If it feels too "hot"
on the skin, apply lavender oil to reduce the "heat".
- Apply to the bottom of the feet, throat, stomach, or abdomen.
It is safest when applied to the bottom of the feet, as
it may be caustic to the skin.
- Dilute w/V-6 and Massage over thymus.
- For headaches put 1 drop on tongue and push against roof of mouth.
- Dilute w/V-6 or use "NEET" (Direct to skin, no dilution - be careful!) for body massage.
- Put 4-8 drops on cotton ball and locate on vents.
- Use the EODR, to look up recipes.
- Use the Symptomology List.
- Use the Reflexology Chart

Make your Own Capsules:
Gelatin capsules are for filling with powder. However, when you fill
with oil, they MUST be ingested immediately or they will disintegrate.
Take a OO capsule, fill with 10 drops of Thieves and top it with 3 drops of Oregano and ingest it.
Dr. Terry Friedmann's recipe for chest and lung problems.
12 drops of Thieves
4 drops of Oregano
2 drops of Frankincense
Put in gel cap and take 3 times a day as a supplement.
My Personal Testimonial:
I can say with total confidence that I have taken the oils internally
for many years. I have been able to "combat" the 2007 flu/cold/epidemic
that was keeping many people at bay for 3-6 weeks - in just a few days!
It is very important to take the oils internally (5-10 drops each)
for a full 3-10 days, similar to the usual antiobiotic that most people choose to ingest.
Some of my favorite recipes that I have used:
Gary's "antibiotic formula" for Colds & Flu:
4 drops of Frankincense
5 drops of Oregano
4 drops of Thieves or Immupower or Thyme
Take 4-5 times daily; should have something light to eat prior.
Some people have had indigestion when the oils began to break down.
The best essential oil for treating digestive complaints include:
(Peppermint is best for the digestive system. It is cooling and soothing,
and is often used as a tea. It is anti-inflammatory to the digestive system. I like to put one drop in my palm and "lick" it. This works great!)
10 drops lemon
8 drops mountain savory
3 drops oregano
Put in "00" capsule
- Take up to 3 times a day
8 drops Clove
5 drops Thyme
5 drops Oregano
Put into a "00" gel capsule
- Take up to 3x/day
